Robert Mueller was a distinguished FBI Director for 12 years under both the Bush and Obama Administration. He served from September 2001 until he retired in September 2013. On May 17, 2017, only nine days after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel to the Justice Department’s Russian Investigation. Democrats and Republicans both supported Mueller’s appointment for his ability to follow the facts and run an effective investigation.
One month later, Trump allies start to question Mueller’s role in the investigation. On June 13, CEO of Newsmax, Chris Ruddy, suggested that Trump was tempted to fire Mueller in which Speaker Paul Ryan said to let him do his job. The next day, the Washington Post reported that Mueller is investigating Trump for obstructing justice for interfering in the Russian investigation.
