Paul Manafort is a long time political consultant and lobbyist with activities dating back to campaigns for Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole.

He and Roger Stone start up lobbying firm in 1980 named Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly. One of the first clients was Donald Trump. The firm was known for work with problematic world leaders like Angolan rebel Jonas Savimbi, Ferdinand Marcos, and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

He joined the Donald Trump campaign in March 2016. He became the manager in April 2016 after the firing of manager Corey Lewandowski. He resigned in mid August 2016 after news broke of Manafort possibly receiving millions in corrupt funds for his work with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

The FBI began an investigation into Manafort for his business activities by mid-2016. He case involves investigations by FBI, NSA, CIA and the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Unit.

Manafort’s Russia connection

Viktor Yanukovych-Seen by many as a puppet of Vladimir Putin, his policies were a mirror of the Kremlin including shifting influence from NATO to Moscow. He is currently living in exile in Russia.

Dmytro Firtash-As a broker between Gazprom and Ukraine, Firtash made his billions in energy. He was a partner with Manafort in the failed Drake Hotel redevelopment deal. Though allegedly part of a money laundering the case was dismissed when the deal failed.
