Devin Nunes has been the U.S. Representative of District 22 in California since 2003. He has been the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence since 2015.

On February 27, 2017, Nunes issued a denial of Trump campaign contacts with Russian officials or intelligence. He denied the need for a special prosecutor. Instead, he shifted the focus to alleged leaks of information related to the case as the real crime to focus upon.

After an unscheduled lone visit to the White House, then on March 22, 2017, Nunes gave an impromptu press conference claiming there was evidence of “incidental collection” of the Trump campaign. Colleagues criticized him for acting alone on this. He then scheduled a hearing for testimony from Sally Yates but then cancelled it on March 28, 2017.

Nunes stated on April 6, 2017 he would remove himself from the Russia probe yet he continued to be involved on the case.

Though Representative Devin Nunes is in the position to hold the Executive Branch accountable, he was used by the Trump Administration to complicate the investigation by the House Intelligence Committee into Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 election.
