Rod Rosenstein served as U.S. Deputy Attorney General from April 2017 to May 2019, after twelve years as U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland. Because Attorney General Jeff Sessions had recused himself in March 2017 from matters relating to the 2016 campaign, Rosenstein was the acting attorney general for the Russia investigation. On May 17, 2017, days after President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, he appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as Special Counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and related matters.
Rosenstein supervised the Special Counsel’s work and personally announced two of its major indictments: the February 16, 2018, indictment of the Internet Research Agency and associated individuals, and the July 13, 2018, indictment of twelve GRU officers for hacking and leaking Democratic Party and Clinton campaign material.
