Robert S. Mueller III, the current special counsel investigating possible relations and the impact of those potential affiliations between Russian officials and President Trump, has an extensive history within the government intelligence realm. Mueller worked in many prestigious and high level jobs within the Justice Department; however, he is most well-known as former FBI Director under former President George W. Bush. Appointed shortly before the September 11th attacks, Mueller reinvented the FBI from a purely crime-fighting organization into a central anti terrorism organization with a new mission. Additionally, Mueller and then Deputy Attorney General James Comey stood up against President Bush to prevent the reestablishment of a covert government surveillance program. Mueller’s work was so well regarded by both Democrats and Republicans alike that he was asked by President Obama to stay as FBI Director three years beyond his 10 year term.

During the Russian investigation, Mueller’s main role has been that of special cousel. After the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, many Democrat senators called for a special counsel to continue the counterintelligence investigation commenced by Comey prior to his expulsion. It was then that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel. During his time as special counsel, not only has Mueller continued the Russian investigation, but he has also as of recently commenced an investigation to determine if President Trump has obstructed justice, an impeachable offense.
