Jeffrey “J.D.” Gordon served as a Pentagon spokesperson under Don Rumsfeld and Secretary Bob Gates from 2005-2009. He is a career Navy public affairs officer and retired Commander. He’s worked for several think tanks, and foundations in Washington D.C. He has M.A. in diplomacy from Norwich University. In 2012, he founded a Super Pac called “Protect America Today” which has funded ads for several GOP campaigns including; Senate leader Mitch McConnell, Steve King, Joni Ernst, Darrell Issa, Tom Cotton, Mike Coffman, Steve Scalise, Cory Gardner and Rob Portman. In 2015, Gordon was the Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to Mike Huckabee.
In March 2016, Gordon joined the Trump campaign as Director of National Security managing the National Security Advisory Committee under its Chairman Jeff Sessions. During the Republican National Convention, Gordon played a key role in amending the GOP platform to fit Trump’s Russia-friendly policy. He told CNN he pushed to alter an amendment to the GOP’s policy on Ukraine to align with Trump’s views. This directly contradicts earlier denials he made in January when he told Business Insider that he never left his assigned table nor spoke publicly at the GOP Nat Sec Subcommittee meeting where the GOP commitment to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression was substantially watered down.
USA Today was first to break the story that J.D. Gordon, along with many others on the Trump team, spoke to Sergey Kislyak at RNC in July 2016 about Trump’s desire to improve U.S.-Russian relations. Gordon said, “I’d consider it an informal conversation just like my interactions with dozens of other ambassadors and senior diplomats in Cleveland.”
Fun Fact: The Steele Dossier claims the Trump campaign “agreed to sideline” protections against Russian aggression in Ukraine after Russia promised to provide stolen DNC emails to Wikileaks.
