Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Houston, Texas, was the first member of Congress to call on the House floor for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, in May 2017, citing the firing of FBI Director James Comey amid the Russia investigation. He forced floor votes on articles of impeachment on December 6, 2017, and January 19, 2018; the House tabled both by large bipartisan margins.
The House impeached Trump on December 18, 2019, on articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress arising from his pressure on Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to announce investigations of Joe Biden, and the Senate acquitted him on February 5, 2020. The House impeached him a second time on January 13, 2021, for incitement of insurrection over the January 6 attack on the Capitol; the Senate acquitted on February 13, 2021.
