This page covers Russian-language news outlets operating independently of the Russian state. Since 2012 the government has narrowed space for them through “foreign agent” and “undesirable organization” laws, website blocking, and, after the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, criminal penalties for contradicting official accounts of the war. Most leading independent outlets now work from exile.
Prominent examples include Meduza, founded in Riga in 2014 by Galina Timchenko after her dismissal as editor of Lenta.ru, which the Prosecutor General declared an undesirable organization in January 2023; Novaya Gazeta, which suspended publication in March 2022 and lost its media license by court order later that year; TV Rain (Dozhd), which left Russia in March 2022; Mediazona, founded in 2014 to cover courts and prisons; The Insider, an investigative outlet known for its joint work with Bellingcat on GRU and FSB operations; and The Bell, a business and politics newsletter founded in 2017 and designated a foreign agent in December 2022. These outlets are also frequent targets of Russian state disinformation and impersonation campaigns.
