Igor Sergeyevich Ivanov (born 1945) served as foreign minister of the Russian Federation from September 1998 to February 24, 2004, succeeding Yevgeny Primakov when Primakov became prime minister. A career diplomat, he had been ambassador to Spain and then first deputy foreign minister under Primakov. He served through the end of the Yeltsin presidency and Vladimir Putin’s first term, including the 1999 Kosovo crisis and the post-September 11 period of cooperation with Washington.

He was succeeded by Sergei Lavrov in 2004 and then served as Secretary of the Security Council from 2004 to 2007. He later headed the Russian International Affairs Council.
