Michael Morell was the deputy director of the CIA from 2010 until he became Director of the CIA in 2011-2013. Morell retired from government positions in August 2013. After keeping his political preferences out of the public eye, in August 2016, he was quoted in a New York Times article endorsing Clinton and suggested Trump is Putin’s “unwitting agent” and that Trump is “not only unqualified for the job, but he may well pose a threat to our national security.”

By December 2016, Morell equated the Russian interference in the 2016 election to the 9/11 attacks. After Morell suggested that there was “a lot of smoke but no fire” in the Trump-Russia investigation, the Trump administration used his quote to mislead the public in March 2017.
