House Oversight and Government Reform Committee
The principle goal of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is to exercise oversight with regard to federal government to ensure government is governing effectively and efficiently. Additionally, the Committee seeks to vigorously expose and examine government waste, fraud and abuse.
The primary focus of this Committee has been to delve into and thoroughly examine possibly nefarious financial transactions between Michael Flynn and Turkish and Russian entities. This search for clarity relating to this issue of Flynn has led Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and (at the time) Chairman Jason Chaffetz to spearhead an investigation and request documents from White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, former FBI Director James Comey, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and United States Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
The Committee consists of Congressmen with the recently appointed Trey Gowdy as Chairman and Elijah Cummings as Ranking Member. In addition, there are 22 Republican representatives and 17 Democrat representatives who contribute to the Committee work.
In addition to trying to amass information regarding Michael Flynn’s possible financial transactions with Turkish and Russian entities, the Committee has also had members, like Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) discuss the recent Comey hearing. Finally, most recently, Trey Gowdy replaced Chaffetz as Chairman of the Committee after his announcement to resign and leave Congress.
